Admissions Policy
The International Scholars Academy offers an educational IB program that is highly beneficial for many students. To ensure a child’s best chance at success. It is important that parents recognize and support the vision, mission, programs, and policies of the school when applying. The admission committee seeks students who will be able to function successfully in the learning community settings at ISA. A prospective student’s ability to blend socially and academically with learners in a group’s taken into careful consideration during the review process. Students will not be refused admission to the International Scholars Academy based on sex, race, color, ethnic origin, marital or familial status. Admissions, however, may be denied to students who:
- Perform poorly on the screening test which is a part of the interview process
- Have documented behavioral issues
- The Academic Advisory Committee feel it would not be successful based on previous academic performance and/or the results from the screening testing.
Priority Enrollment, Age Requirement
- Priority for enrollment is given to siblings of currently enrolled ISA students when space is available.
- Diplomats’ children who meet the school requirements.
- To be eligible for entrance into kindergarten, all applicants must be five years old by Sept 30th of their matriculating year. (ISA admins have the right to make exceptions based on testing and interviews).
- To be eligible for entrance into first grade, all applicants must be six years old by Sept 30th of their matriculating year. (ISA admins have the right to make exceptions based on testing and interviews).
Waiting List
Applicants that meet the admission requirements but that are applying to grades that are full will be placed on a waiting list. Should a vacancy occur, the enrollment committee will review and select students from the pool based on a host of selection criteria.
An office of Admission and Registration shall serve all school divisions operated by the International Scholars Academy. The service provided by this office shall be directed by an Admissions Coordinator whose functions shall be supervised by the principal with the support and assistance of the staff of the Finance and Operations Office.
- The office receives the requests on the phone, in person, and online. Admissions coordinator refers the inquirers to fill out the online inquiry form on the school website for every child and navigating the school page.
- Schedules for the online virtual open house/ or in campus
- Schedules for the welcoming events (virtual/on-campus) using event registration
Requirements:
All grades follow the same basic procedure to be considered for admission. All students must submit the following:
- A $200 non-refundable application fee
- A $300 non-refundable technology fee
- Passport sized photograph of the student to be uploaded online
- Copy of Birth Certificate and /or passport documentation
- Visa for non-US citizens
- Parent passport-non-US-citizen
- One year’s previous academic records for students applying to kindergarten and grade 1.
- Two years’ previous academic records for students applying to grades 2 through 8
- Three years’ previous academic records for students applying to grades 9 through 12
- All school forms (online forms) and other.
- The Commonwealth of VA Health form.
Age:
The admissions policies of the International Scholars Academy are intended to comply with the Legislative Code of Virginia, including the age guidelines for attendance in an educational program. Based on those standards, are requirement for admissions to ISA programs are as follows:
- Kindergarten: A student entering Kindergarten must have turned five (5) years old on or before September 30th of that school year. (ISA admins have the right to make exceptions based on testing and interviews).
- First Grade: A student entering First Grade must have turned six (6) years old on or before September 30th of that school year. (ISA admins have the right to make exceptions based on testing and interviews).
Grade 2 through 8: The usual and customary age for each grade level is considered, as well as the following:
- Official report cards and school records for the previous two years verifying satisfactory performance for the grade level under consideration.
- Grade Placement verified by proficiency tests in Arabic, English, and Mathematics prior to acceptance (Department Heads or designated teachers will grade the tests)
- Disciplinary Records.
Grades 9 through 12: The usual and customary age for each grade level is considered, as well as the following:
- Official report cards and school records for the previous three years verifying satisfactory performance for the grade level under consideration.
- A” B” average is required as verified by original documentation from the previous school.
- Grade placement verified by proficiency tests in Arabic, English, and mathematics prior to acceptance (Department Heads or designated teachers will grade the test)
- Disciplinary records
- Two recommendation letters may be required for high school students. If required, one of the letters should be from officials of the school previously attended, If possible.
- Students applying to school who are 20 years of age, or more are not to be admitted at ISA.
General
- All applicants must present evidence of successful completion of the previous grade when applying for admission.
- Students may be placed in a lower grade level based on grade records, admission tests, Student interview, or graduation requirements. Parents will be informed of the grade level assigned and will thereupon have the option to continue/discontinue the admission process.
